Have you ever walked into your garden, noticed holes in the leaves, or yellowing, or black spots, or something crawling, and immediately thought, oh my gosh, I'm going to lose the whole crop?
We have all done it. We have all walked out there and panicked a little.
Here is the problem. Most people diagnose their plants backwards. They start with the treatment instead of figuring out what is actually happening. And that costs money, time, and a whole lot of unnecessary stress.
Because not every damaged leaf needs to be sprayed. Not every yellow leaf means disease. Sometimes your plant is perfectly healthy. Sometimes it is the weather. Sometimes the insects you are seeing are actually helping you. And sometimes, yes, there really is a problem.
By the end of this post, you will know exactly what to look for before you ever reach for a spray bottle.
Start With One Question: What Changed?
Plants really do speak a language. They cannot tell us what is wrong, so they leave clues. Our job is to think like a detective, because every clue matters.
When something looks off, before anything else, ask yourself:
- What changed, and where did it start?
- Is it every plant, or just one variety?
- Is it one area, or the entire section?
- Did it happen overnight, or gradually?
- What has the weather been doing?
That last one is the big one. The weather often tells you more than the plant does.
The Golden Rule: Never Diagnose From a Single Leaf
This is the rule I come back to every single time.
Never diagnose from one plant, or one leaf on the plant.
Look at the entire plant first. Then look at the neighboring plants. Then look at your whole setup, whether that is a backyard bed or an entire field.
Patterns matter. Patterns are what tell you the story.
I cannot tell you how many photos I get of a single close-up leaf with the question, what is this? And that is honestly the hardest thing to diagnose, because a single leaf is just a snippet of a section of a moment. I want to see the whole picture.
Was there hail? Do you have kids? Do you have dogs? Did the lawnmower shoot something across the bed? What is your watering practice? Is there a dark painted fence radiating heat behind it? Is it planted near a driveway? All of that changes the environment your plant is living in.
Sometimes Nothing Is Actually Wrong
I love this part, because it should immediately lower your anxiety. Sometimes there really is nothing wrong.
Heat stress
It is summer, and we all have a little heat stress. When it gets very hot, very humid, or extremely dry, leaves droop. Flowers flop. Plants just look miserable. Then evening cools down and they recover.
That is not disease. That is summer. Hydrangeas are probably the biggest divas about this.
Before you add more water to a wilted plant, touch your soil. Check it. Make sure water is actually what the plant needs.
Storm, wind, and hail damage
Thunderstorms leave torn leaves, broken stems, and scuffed petals. Sometimes plants just look awful afterward. That damage is not contagious. You cannot catch thunderstorm damage from one plant to another.
Small hail creates tiny holes that look exactly like insect damage. Heavy wind shreds foliage in a way that mimics chewing. It is worth pausing before you assume a bug did it.
Sun scald
Yes, plants can get sunburned.
We saw this in our peonies this spring. We had a beautiful cool spring leading into peony season, then we got hit with July level heat in May. All the summer plants were thrilled. All the spring plants that wanted a soft, gentle transition were shocked. We ended up with bleached leaves, white patches, and burn.
None of that comes from a pathogen. That was the plant saying, I am stressed and now I have a sunburn.
This also connects to watering. Water droplets sitting on a leaf midday act like a magnifier and can burn the tissue. I see it most in greenhouses and hoop houses, but it happens outdoors too. If you realize at 2pm that you never watered those patio pots, go water them, just keep the water off the leaves.
Transplant shock
Transplant shock is when a plant goes into the ground and simply needs time to adjust. Wait, what just happened, where am I, I am not sure about any of this.
It shows up more dramatically when seedlings have not been hardened off. Imagine growing in a perfectly conditioned greenhouse and then getting planted straight outside with no exposure to wind or harsh elements. That is a rough day for a plant.
It is why we brush the tops of our seedlings consistently. It toughens up the stems and gets them used to a little contact before the real world hits.
Yellow leaves and slower growth
Old leaves die as a plant ages. That is just how plants work. Lower leaves naturally yellow first, especially on tomatoes, zinnias, and sunflowers.
Not everything needs fixing. If the yellowing bothers you, go ahead and trim those leaves off. That actually helps, because the plant stops putting energy into leaves that are on their way out anyway.
Pollination marks
Some flowers simply look a little rough after pollination. There is a lot happening inside the plant during that process, and the marks left behind by pollinators do not mean something attacked your flower. Sometimes it means your plant is doing exactly what it should be doing.
How Weather Creates Problems That Are Not Really Problems
Summer brings extremes. Heat, thunderstorms, wind, hot days, cool nights, temperature swings, heavy dew, and here on the East Coast, a whole lot of humidity.
Weather causes many of the issues we tend to blame on pests.
Here is the important distinction. Weather does not usually create disease by itself. It creates the conditions where disease becomes possible.
Weather is not your enemy. It is just changing the environment.
A perfect example from our farm this year: our statice is the best we have grown in years. Thick, full, constantly producing, and no rust. We normally grow it in the hoop house because that is where it prefers to be, and this year we put some out in the field. It has been dry and hot, which is exactly what statice loves.
Meanwhile, our cosmos are furious about it. They want cooler and damper. Same weather, two completely different reactions.
How to Read Insect Damage
Instead of memorizing every insect, learn to read the damage.
Chewing damage means large holes, missing leaf edges, or skeletonized leaves. Caterpillars usually start at the edge and work their way in, leaving bigger and bigger holes. Japanese beetles are the ones that skeletonize a leaf, leaving behind what my dad used to call the lettuce bones, all the tough ribs with the soft tissue gone.
Tiny pinholes are usually flea beetles.
Ragged holes point to a larger chewing insect, think grasshoppers.
Slime trails plus holes means slugs. They leave the best clues of anyone.
Sticky, shiny leaves are honeydew. That comes from aphids and whiteflies sucking juices out of the plant. Honeydew is the polite word for it. The reality is it is aphid and whitefly excrement.
Curling leaves are worth flipping over. Insects often curl a leaf around themselves to hide. If you have curling with browning edges and no insect present, that is a different story.
Webbing is a big indicator. Not spider webs, but the fine webbing left by caterpillars or spider mites. Spider mites show up during hot, dry weather.
The single best tip I can give you: always flip the leaf over. Half the story is underneath.
How to Recognize Actual Disease
Disease is trickier, because it needs the right conditions to take hold, and it can mimic other kinds of damage. But disease usually follows a pattern, and it falls into four broad categories.
Fungal
Fungal issues usually leave a mark. Spots, powder, fuzzy growth, or rot.
Powdery mildew sits on top of the leaf. Downy mildew sits on the bottom. Both leave marks, so check top and bottom.
Bacterial
Look for wilting, a water soaked appearance (the plant looks like it is drowning rather than thirsty), oozing, or damage that spreads rapidly.
If something is spreading fast, remove it right away. And to be very clear about removal: it does not go in the compost pile. It does not go anywhere it can be picked up and spread. Bag it, trash it, get it off the property.
Viral
Viruses show up as mosaic coloring, color changes in unusual patterns, distorted growth, or stunting. Color change in a strange pattern is one of the biggest signals that you are looking at a virus rather than a fungus.
Here is the hard truth. Many plant viruses have no cure. If a plant has one, it will eventually decline, and there is nothing you can do about it except remove it so it does not spread.
Root diseases
If a plant is wilting despite damp soil, look down. Root rots cause plants to decline from the bottom up.
The Simplest Way to Tell Them Apart
Disease does not usually make random holes. Insects do.
Disease changes the tissue. It alters the structure of the plant.
Insects remove the tissue. They take it away.
Hold on to that one and you will diagnose faster.
The Five Step Plant Diagnosis Checklist
Before you treat anything, walk through these five questions.
1. What exactly am I seeing? Not "my plant looks bad." Be specific. Yellow leaves? Brown spots? Chewed edges? Wilting? Name it.
2. How many plants is this happening to? One plant, ten plants, or the whole bed? That answer alone tells you more than a photo of a single leaf.
3. What has the weather been like? Hail? Four straight days of rain? A thunderstorm that whipped everything around? A heat spike? Take stock before you blame a bug.
4. Can I actually find an insect? Insects are excellent at hiding, so look closely and flip those leaves. And remember, if you have a healthy garden, you should have bugs. Caterpillars are part of that. Do not treat invisible insects, because spraying blindly harms your beneficials.
5. Is it getting worse? Mother Nature has a balance. Where you have aphids, you often end up with ladybugs. You get to decide where your threshold is, and whether it needs help. Many issues stop on their own.
When You Should Actually Treat
This is where a lot of people jump in too early. Treat when:
- You are positive the problem is correctly identified
- The damage is actively increasing
- The plant cannot outgrow the damage
- Your harvest is genuinely threatened
- You know the treatment will actually work
Do not spray just in case. Spraying preventatively harms beneficial insects, can build resistance in pests, costs money, and if you are treating the wrong thing, it will not solve the problem anyway.
Sometimes doing nothing is the best answer. I know. That is really, really hard for gardeners, because we want everything to be perfect. And that is okay.

The best growers are not the ones who never have problems. They are the ones who slow down, observe, ask good questions, and make informed decisions instead of emotional ones.
Your plants do not need to be perfect. They just need someone willing to pay attention.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why are the bottom leaves on my zinnias turning yellow?
Lower leaves naturally yellow as a plant ages, and zinnias, tomatoes, and sunflowers are especially prone to it. If the rest of the plant looks healthy and the yellowing is limited to the oldest leaves near the base, this is normal aging, not disease. Trimming those leaves off is fine and lets the plant redirect its energy.
How can I tell if holes in my leaves came from insects or from weather?
Look at the pattern and the timing. Hail creates tiny, scattered holes that appear suddenly after a storm. Wind shreds and tears foliage, especially along edges. Insect damage tends to be more consistent, often starting at leaf edges (caterpillars), leaving uniform pinholes (flea beetles), or removing soft tissue while leaving the veins behind (Japanese beetles). If the damage showed up overnight right after a storm, weather is the more likely explanation.
What is the sticky, shiny residue on my plant leaves?
That is honeydew, and it comes from aphids or whiteflies feeding on your plant. It is their excrement. If you find sticky leaves, check the undersides of the foliage and the new growth, which is where those insects tend to cluster.
Can plants really get sunburned?
Yes. It is called sun scald, and it shows up as bleached leaves, white patches, or burned areas. It typically happens when plants that were growing in cool conditions get hit with a sudden heat spike, or when water sits on leaves during the hottest part of the day and magnifies the sunlight.
Should I put diseased plants in my compost pile?
No. If you are removing a plant because of disease or a suspected virus, take it completely out of the growing area and put it in the trash. Composting it risks spreading the problem back through your garden.
Do I need to treat every pest I find in my garden?
No. A healthy garden has insects in it, including caterpillars. Treat only when you have correctly identified the problem, the damage is increasing, the plant cannot outgrow it, and you know the treatment will work. Spraying preventatively kills beneficial insects, can create pest resistance, and costs you money without solving anything.
Why is my plant wilting even though the soil is wet?
Wilting with damp soil is a signal to look below ground. Root rot causes plants to decline from the bottom up while the soil stays moist. Wilting from dryness will show up alongside dry soil, which you can confirm by digging down a few inches rather than just touching the surface.
