Protecting Your Skin While Living Life Outdoors: A Conversation with Dermatology PA Christina Da Leon

At The Flower Files, we spend a lot of time talking about beauty, nature, and life outdoors. Whether we're growing flowers, designing weddings, working in the garden, or simply enjoying sunshine on the Eastern Shore, being outside is a big part of who we are.

That’s why we were excited to sit down with Christina Da Leon, a board-certified physician assistant specializing in dermatology. Christina has spent more than seven years helping patients protect their skin, prevent skin cancer, and navigate the often overwhelming world of skincare. As someone who regularly works with outdoor enthusiasts, farmers, gardeners, and everyday people trying to take better care of their skin, she shared practical advice that applies to all of us.

The Best Sunscreen Is the One You'll Actually Wear

One of the biggest takeaways from our conversation was refreshingly simple: the best sunscreen is the one you will consistently use.

With so many headlines questioning sunscreen ingredients and endless product recommendations flooding social media, it's easy to feel overwhelmed. Christina explained that while there are ongoing discussions about certain sunscreen ingredients, the dangers of sun exposure are far more established and significant.

She compared sunscreen preferences to finding your favorite pair of jeans. Everyone has different preferences, and what works for one person may not work for another. The key is finding a product that feels comfortable enough that you'll wear it every day.

Understanding Physical vs. Chemical Sunscreens

Christina explained that there are two primary types of sunscreen:

  • Chemical sunscreens, which absorb UV radiation
  • Physical (mineral) sunscreens, which use ingredients like zinc oxide to create a protective barrier

If you're concerned about chemical ingredients, mineral sunscreens can be an excellent alternative. The important thing is using protection consistently whenever you're outside.

Sun Protection Goes Beyond Sunscreen

For those of us who spend long days outside, sunscreen isn't the only line of defense.

Christina emphasized the value of:

  • UV-protective clothing
  • Wide-brimmed hats
  • Sunglasses
  • Seeking shade when possible

As someone who works outdoors, we could relate to discovering how effective UV-protective shirts can be. Not only do they help reduce sun exposure, but they also provide protection from bugs, debris, and other environmental irritants.

The Hidden Cause of Premature Aging

Many people spend hundreds—or even thousands—of dollars trying to reverse wrinkles, discoloration, and other visible signs of aging.

According to Christina, much of that damage starts with sun exposure.

She noted that research has estimated that a significant percentage of visible skin aging is related to cumulative sun damage. Wrinkles, brown spots, texture changes, and uneven pigmentation often develop over years of UV exposure. In many cases, the prevention strategy is far simpler than the treatments people eventually pursue.

Wear sunscreen today, and your future self may thank you.

Why Simpler Skincare Often Works Better

One topic that generated a lot of discussion was the explosion of skincare products and trends.

From viral TikTok recommendations to elaborate multi-step routines, it's easy to believe that effective skincare requires a shelf full of products. Christina sees a different pattern in her practice.

She described a phenomenon she calls "product hopping"—when people try a product for a short period, don't see immediate results, and quickly move on to something else.

Instead, she recommends focusing on consistency and simplicity.

For most people, a solid skincare foundation includes:

  1. A gentle cleanser
  2. A moisturizer
  3. Daily sunscreen

Everything else should be considered an optional enhancement based on individual goals and skin concerns.

Your Skin Is Your Body's Protective Shield

We often forget that skin is the body's largest organ.

Christina described it as the roof of your house—a protective barrier that shields everything underneath. When that barrier becomes damaged, irritated, or inflamed, problems can quickly develop.

Dryness, irritation, sensitivity, inflammation, and even increased susceptibility to infection can all occur when the skin barrier isn't functioning properly.

That's why simple habits like moisturizing regularly can make such a meaningful difference over time.

Wedding-Day Skin Starts Months Before the Wedding

As florists, we spend a lot of time around weddings, so we couldn't resist asking about bridal skincare.

Christina's advice was clear: don't wait until the last minute.

If you're preparing for a wedding or major event:

  • Avoid introducing new products right before the event.
  • Give treatments time to work.
  • Focus on hydration.
  • Develop a consistent routine well in advance.
  • Consult a dermatology professional early if you have concerns like acne, discoloration, or sensitivity.

Healthy, glowing skin is usually the result of preparation and consistency—not a miracle treatment a few days before the event.

Don't Forget About Your Scalp

Many people don't realize that scalp health falls squarely within dermatology.

Conditions such as dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis can cause itching, flaking, and discomfort. Christina explained that scalp concerns are extremely common and often influenced by factors like stress, weather changes, and environmental triggers.

Because the scalp is skin, dermatologists routinely evaluate and treat these concerns. In many cases, a targeted shampoo or treatment plan can make a significant difference.

Why Skin Cancer Screenings Matter

Perhaps the most important part of our conversation centered around skin cancer awareness.

Christina shared that skin cancer is the most common type of cancer and that approximately one in five people will develop a skin cancer during their lifetime. She was inspired to enter dermatology partly because her grandfather passed away from melanoma, one of the most aggressive forms of skin cancer.

For anyone who spends significant time outdoors, routine skin checks can be incredibly valuable.

Signs You Should Have Checked

Christina encouraged people to pay attention to spots that:

  • Won't heal
  • Bleed unexpectedly
  • Continue changing
  • Look noticeably different from surrounding spots
  • Simply seem "off"

Her advice was straightforward: if something looks funny or acts funny, get it checked. Early detection can make an enormous difference.

Final Thoughts

One of the things we appreciated most about this conversation was how practical Christina's advice was.

There was no pressure to buy expensive products or follow complicated routines. Instead, the message was clear:

Protect your skin from the sun. Keep your routine simple. Stay consistent. Pay attention to changes. And don't be afraid to seek professional guidance when something doesn't seem right.

For those of us who spend our days in gardens, flower fields, farms, and outdoor wedding venues, our skin works hard every day. Taking a few simple steps now can help protect it for years to come.
