Scientific Name: Tulipa gesneriana

Seasons: Early Spring , Spring

Why We Love It

Tulips are one of the earliest blooms we see in the spring!  Planted as a bulb in the fall, they overwinter underground and start coming up in March.

Grown in the millions in the Netherlands, it can be just as and fun to fill your garden or vases with tulips at home!  As a cut flower for arranging, tulips are pulled up by the bulb and treated as an annual.  In the garden where they aren’t cut, they will come back every year as a perennial.

Tulips come in so many different colors, sizes, and petal styles – you are bound to find some that you love!

Design Notes

  • most tulip stems have a shorter length
  • petals can be reflexed outwards to create a more round shape
  • tulips are temperature sensitive: when in a warmer room they can bend over and be flexible, when they are colder they stand more upright
  • lots of varieties have variegated color petals!

Growing Notes

  • certain varieties have an early/mid/late bloom time to extend your season
  • bulbs have to have at least 10 weeks of cold in order to bloom
  • deer love to eat tulips, so make sure you have a fence or spray!
  • when planting to harvest for cut flowers, they should be planted closer together!
