Colorful ranunculus growing in the hoop house.

Ranunculus

Scientific Name: Ranunculus asiaticus

Why We Love It

Ranunculus grow from corms, similar to a bulb, and bloom in the spring into gorgeous fan-favorite flowers!  Available in hundreds of colors, you can be sure to find a variety that fits your style.

Popular in the Victorian era as a way to let someone know you admire them, these beauties are still in demand today as one of the most requested wedding florals.

Don’t let their fame deter you from growing these for yourself!  Ranunculus corms are readily available online and at garden centers, and make a beautiful addition to any space.

Design Notes

  • these are some of our, and everyone’s, favorites!! Lots of colors, different sizes, and a romantic vibe make them versatile
  • ranunculus are popular in boutonnieres as well as bouquets, bud vases, and other arrangements
  • we don’t use these on wedding cake designs, as they are highly toxic
  • Butterfly ranunculus have a more open center and delicate structure, while a more typical ranunculus has petals that fill in the center and can often be much larger

Growing Notes

  • we grow our ranunculus in our weather-protected hoop house, and plant them any time from December – February
  • although cheaper to grow yourselves than order cut flowers from a wholesaler, corms can still be pricey
  • corms can be replanted each year, but the first year will always have the biggest bloom
  • soak your dried corms before planting for best results!
