Why We Love It

Hydrangeas are a summer favorite that we absolutely love for arranging and especially love to use in wedding work. Their large, full blooms add incredible texture and volume to any type of arrangement, making them perfect for bouquets, centerpieces, and statement pieces.

Available in a variety of shades of white, green, pink, blue, and beautiful antique tones, hydrangeas can also be enjoyed fresh or dried.

The name Hydrangea comes from Greek words meaning “water vessel,” a fitting name for a flower that loves plenty of water!

Design Notes

A true workhorse in floral design, hydrangeas can quickly create shape, coverage, and a strong foundation for a design.

  • use low in arrangements to create a base for other flowers
  • tuck smaller pieces into gaps to hide mechanics and add fullness
  • cluster blooms together for dramatic impact or use a single stem as a focal flower
  • mature blooms hold up beautifully in larger installations and statement pieces

Growing Notes

Hydrangeas are fairly easy to grow once established, but they love consistent moisture—especially during the heat of summer!

  • plant in rich, well-drained soil and keep them evenly watered
  • morning sun with some afternoon protection is ideal for many varieties of the mophead species (Hydrangea macrophylla)
  • full sun or partial sun is ideal for the limelight varieties (Hydrangea paniculata)
  • panicle hydrangeas, like Limelight, bloom on new wood and can be pruned in late winter or early spring
  • deer love hydrangeas, so protect plants with fencing or use deer repellent regularly
  • mature plants can grow quite large, so give them plenty of room to reach their full size
